Ms. Snider’s middle school reading resource class read a book called Seedfolks about a communal garden that revitalizes the general community of the impoverished neighborhood in which it was created. In response to the reading, her students decided to develop their own community garden here at CICS Jackson. We are currently growing collards, cucumber, broccoli, calendula, lemon balm, peas, and Thai peppers. We would like to encourage other students, parents, staff, and community members to make their own gardens, and to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor when they ripen!
To celebrate the end of their science unit on fossils, CICS Jackson third graders acted as archaeologists and excavated chocolate chips from cookies! The students first mapped their “dig site” (the cookie) and any “bones” (chocolate chips) that were evident. Then, they used toothpicks and cotton swabs to see how many chocolate chips they could cleanly “excavate” from the cookies!
CICS Jackson first graders enjoy participating in center rotations as they play sight word games on their iPods, create Thinking Maps, and practice writing sentences on whiteboards!
CICS Jackson 3rd graders exercised voice and choice when it came to showing mastery in their latest science block about life cycles. Students used materials from home in combination with flow maps to sequence the life stages of various animals. The projects are unique and, best of all, they were created at home with parent support!
In March, CICS Jackson will administer the PARCC Performance Based Assessment for students in grades 3-8 (English Language Arts and Math). We invite you to learn more about the assessment and how students will be able to demonstrate their mastery towards Common Core State Standards at an upcoming family event.
Please join us at one of our Black History Celebrations on February 26 or February 27 (2:00 p.m.) to also find out how you can help prepare your child at home. Look for more details about the celebrations in your child’s take-home folder.
